Bespoke Remodelling
Traditionally built properties, often have great character but are sometimes become unfit for purpose. This can be due to a number of reasons such as requiring internal or external overhauls, changes to modern living habits where space is not used optimally or the property has poor energy efficiency.
At Crown Traditional Craftsmen we have a wealth of experience in the complexities of remodelling period properties. We pride ourselves in our in-depth knowledge and experience of traditional building techniques and how to utilise them to work for each project. This can be seen in the image above where we transformed the Gardener’s Quarters at Balliliesk Estate into a re-imagined contemporary cottage.
Restoration Projects
Much of our built heritage can often be found to be in a poor state of repair and in order to preserve it's history it must be cared for and restored. It may also need to be re-purposed in order to give the structure a sustainable and long-term future.
Our knowledge and skills in this specialist area of construction were tested to the limited when we took the ruined Knock Old Castle in Largs from a state of collapse and turned it into a five-star holiday retreat. Much of the estates own materials were used to minimise the carbon footprint such as felled Oak, Elm and Yew trees in order to create the interior of Castle. Similarly, red sandstone from the estate was utilised in new and repaired fabric. Scottish slate was also used throughout and the project as a whole was the eventual winner of the Project of the Year at The Herald Scottish Property Awards in 2017.
New Build Commissions
Build housing stock is often produced from 'off the shelf' designs instead of being specially tailored projects to meet the client's specific needs. We pride ourselves in being able to deliver projects of the highest quality that realise our client’s desired specifications.
This was apparent on our project at Golfview where a unique timber kit was produced in order to fit with our client’s unique vision and to maximise the available interior and exterior space. We also produced many bespoke architectural features for the interior of the house to suit the clients modern twist on traditional materials. These include oak beams, specially designed stained glass windows, sustainable sourced deer antler furniture and a sculpted sandstone fireplace.
Cabinetry and Furniture
We pride ourselves in our ability to also offer bespoke carpentry services. We have already provided many bespoke pieces for multiple projects that range from specially designed and tailored kitchens, bedrooms to more unique offerings like tack and boot rooms, as well as private home studies and larger office spaces.
In tandem with this we also offer custom and unique furniture pieces on which we collaborate closely with our clients, from concept to installation, in order to realise their vision; no matter how big or small. This can range from producing a simple table to refitting and entire room in bespoke and hand-made carpentry mouldings, panelling and architectural features.
Stonework
At Crown Traditional Craftsmen we feel that a particular area of expertise, which sets us apart from others, is our experience and knowledge of stonemasonry. We are highly fortunate to have a skilled team of stonemasons and specialist stone conservation accredited surveyor, who have worked on numerous listed buildings and scheduled monuments, that have the unique skills to deal with the most complex projects relating to stone.
An example stone carving recently carried out is the replacement lion statue, pictured above, on a Grade A listed castle on the Clyde coast. However, our capabilities are not restricted to bespoke carvings or grand projects as we also do everything from dressing, building and restoring stone to simple cleaning and repointing with lime mortar.
Conservation and Remediation
The main focus of our company is on traditional crafts and materials and, as such, it is only natural that we are involved in the conservation, restoration and repairs of structures to preserve them in their current state for future generations.
For many years we have been involved in rectifying many simple and more complex issues such as timber decay, water ingress, weathering, building stabilisation and the preservation of historic building fabrics.
This was most notable in our involvement at Earlston Castle, pictured above, which is a scheduled ancient monument and Grade 'A' listed. The project called for the retainment of much of the original 16th century oak roof and floor beams. However, given the age and condition of the original beams we had to supplement what was still in use with steel plates to ensure the integrity of the buildings structure.
Our Passion
Quality is paramount to everything we do at Crown Traditional Craftsmen, but we also pride ourselves in our service and how we build a rapport with our clients; many of whom go on to commission us for further projects.
We are proud that we only use quality materials and all of our craftsmen are of the highest standards. No matter the scale or notoriety of the project, all projects are treated with the same amount of care, attention, professionalism and craftsmanship wither its a small maintenance call out or a full Castle Restoration.
Our craftsmen share our passion for the projects that we undertake and everyone holds each other to account on the quality and standards that we uphold. This is most evident with the progression we see from our semi skilled operatives and apprentices whom you can see grow daily in terms of there skill sets and confidence, due to the new skills that they have be taught from our master craftsmen.
Our commitment to quality, is the central pillar by which we judge ourselves. This is why we carrying out all our projects to industry best practice. We will always refuse to cut corners that leave our clients with a lower standard of finish that will not stand the test of time. We pride ourselves in this approach as it has the effect of leaving our clients with a superior project for years to come but also means that the project has good sustainable credentials as it is built for longevity.
